It is used most importantly for the EU&#8217;s official list of birds, which guides the <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/nature\/legislation\/birdsdirective\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birds Directive<\/a>, whose goal is to protect all of the wild bird species naturally occurring in the European Union. This list is also used for the implementation of the Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law and the Directive on environmental liability with regard to the prevention and remedying of environmental damage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"padding-left: 15px;\">The United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 15px;\">During the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Conservation of Migratory Species (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cms.int\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/Res_11_19_Taxonomy_%26_Nomenclature_of_Birds_E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COP 12<\/a>), celebrated in Manila, Philippines, in October 2017, the <em>HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World, Volume 2: Passerines<\/em> was adopted as the CMS standard reference for bird taxonomy and nomenclature for passerine species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 15px;\">Given that at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cms.int\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/Res_11_19_Taxonomy_%26_Nomenclature_of_Birds_E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COP 11<\/a>, celebrated in Quito, Ecuador 4-9 November 2014, the CMS adopted <em>Volume 1: Non-passerines<\/em> as the standard reference for non-passerine species, with the adoption of <em>Volume 2 the HBW-BirdLife Illustrated Checklist<\/em> was confirmed as the definitive reference for bird taxonomy and nomenclature across all of the parties, which will hopefully facilitate the implementation of conventions and conservation tools with a direct benefit to the birds being protected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"padding-left: 15px;\">The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 15px;\">In its resolution on amendments to the AEWA Annexes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iisd.ca\/vol18\/enb1866e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AEWA MOP6 DR1 Rev.1<\/a>), the MOP, <em>inter alia<\/em>:<br \/>\nadopts the reference recommended by the 12th AEWA TC meeting as the AEWA standard reference for waterbird species taxonomy and nomenclature: the &#8220;<em>Handbook of the Birds of the World\/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World<\/em>, Volume 1: Non-passerines,&#8221; by Josep del Hoyo <em>et al<\/em>. (2014).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"padding-left: 15px;\">The International Union for Conservation of Naure (IUCN), including the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 15px;\">The <em>HBW-BirdLife Illustrated Checklist<\/em> was also adopted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), including The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(TM), for which BirdLife International is their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/worldwide\/news\/red-list-2017-seabirds-starving-songbirds-trapped-hope-pelican-and-kiwis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IUCN Red List bird authority<\/a>&#8220;.
